In my mind, the quest for even greater colour in composition, is to blend conventional modality with microtonics. This for me was the holy grail and at first seemed impossible.
Many years ago, I spoke to a fellow musician, whose take on microtonalism was that it simply sounded out of tune. I would agree, if one simply used CC(#/4) etc. However, after listening to Byzantine chants, I became intrigued. Clearly it is possible to blend the two.
Certainly, if the Byzantines could make such music, it should be possible to extend conventional modality to embrace microtonalism. The answer to this question, of course, is yes. We simply need to think of music theory in a slightly different way
